Mr. Ayham AlKawi, in coordination with Erasums Plus students association, conducted a workshop at the IUST about (Why studying in Europe and how can a student get an erasmus scholarship?). He discussed opportunities and challenges for students and gave students advises based on his personal experience. More than 20 students attended the workshop.
IUST organized a workshop for the occasion of inauguration of their Unit for development of scientific research at 9/5/2016. the program of the workshop was as follows:
– Welcome word by Dr. Sadiq Al-Nousirat (IUST)
– Dissemination of the MATRE project and a proposed plan for the Unit by Dr. Chadi Azmeh (IUST)
– Presentation on how to write a good proposal by Dr. Serene Dalati (AIU)
– Presentation on female entrepreneurial-ship by Dr. Victoria Khnouf (AIU)
– Presentation on research in Finance By Dr. Riad Abd Al-Raaouf (DU)
The workshop was attended by Dr. Fayasal Al-Abass (President of IUST) and Dr. Sharif Al-Ashkar (Vice president). The workshop was also attended by deans and several academics from IUST and AIU. The number of students attended the workshop was about 50 students.
Building on earlier coordination and visits, Prof. Dr. M. Maher Kabakibib, the president of AIU, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Syrian Investment ِAgency on Wednesday 27th of April 2016. The visit aims at building bonds with business and industry (WP.3) and insures the sustainability of MATRE project through a number of activities with the Agency including training and conducting economic and feasibility studies.
The second meeting for the preparation of “National Policy Paper” was held on 27th April 2016 at 14 O’clock in the Faculty of Business Administration at AIU. The Syrian partners (SCB, IUST, AIU, DA) discussed the manner in which the Policy Paper should handle the different issues (vision, mission, obstacles, etc) related to the Higher Education System in Syria.
The MATRE Syrian Partners (SCB, IUST, AIU, DA) organized a meeting to work on the National Policy Plan & to coordinate the development of MATRE execution. This meeting was held on 20th April 2016 in the Faculty of Business Administration at AIU. Representatives from the concerned institutions: SCB (Dr. Nabil Sukkar), AIU (Dr. Sulaiman Mouselli, Dr. Kinaz Al Aytoni, Dr. Serene Dalati, Dr. Kinan Naddeh), IUST (Dr. Shadi Alazmeh), Damascus University (Dr. Riad Abdulraouf) discussed the approach to elaborate the National Policy Paper and then the advancement of the project’s work-packages in general. Providing the centres with the equipment and the coming conference of Beirut are particularly considered. Moreover, joint workshops in the three concerned universities are planned to be organized in the coming period.
IUST represented by Dr. Chadi Azmeh, Head of the department of financial and banking sciences, and 50 students from the university visited the Damascus Securities exchange market on Tuesday 12th of April 2016. The visit aimed at building bonds with business and industry (WP3) and introduced MATRE project to the Agency. The director of the market and the director of research department gave two important sessions about the the market history and how it works. Both parties agreed on signing a mutual agreement to strengthening their cooperation, particularly, in training. They presented their intention to receive 25 students form IUST to take a training at the market each summer.
The main aim behind this steering committee meeting of the European and target partners was to present the results of the implemented work packages, present the partner’s sustainability plans and discuss some managerial issues and any further suggestions and improvements to the outputs and outcomes that will be carried out during the funded period of this TEMPUS project. This meeting was hosted by VGTU in 22-23.03.2016
The agenda for this meeting was divided into two parts over two days. The first part was dedicated to present the establishment issues of a scientific journal, present the national policy paper of the ninth work package and the partners’ sustainability plans. The second part was more dedicated to management issues and the results of the quality plan.
In the first day, VGTU dean of business management faculty gave a welcome speech as a host followed by a short talk by Dr. Tariq Mahmoud from OL regarding the status of project implementation. Then the LB/SY universities’ representatives held presentations about their sustainability plans. Finally, a discussion about the project’s managerial issues took place at the second day of this meeting.
On March 31, 2016 MUBS organized an open info day about the Matre Tempus project in the auditorium of the Lebanese Ministry of Education & Higher Education. The main purpose of the event was to increase the visibility of the Matre Tempus project in Lebanon. Sixty eight persons attended the event representing different stakeholders including business & economics students, business & economics faculty members, faculty of business & economics senior administrators, and business community representatives.
Dr. Bassem Kaissi introduced the project and its different work packages and deliverables to the audience with a special focus on the Matre center that was established at MUBS and the national policy paper work package that MUBS is leading. Discussions afterwards identified the following factors as extremely important for business schools to face the challenges of the increasingly competitive business education market in the future:
- Continuous update of Business & Economics curricula
- Introduction of innovative programs in Business Schools
- International experiences for faculty and students in Business Schools
- International accreditation of Business & Economics programs
- Adequate level of funding for Business Schools to afford qualified faculty and support research activities
At the end, most participants were impressed with the project achievements and expressed an interest to continuously inform/update them about any future Matre activity.
Dr. Jehad S. Yacoub from Arab International University conducted a workshop about “Monitoring and Evaluation and its roles in Effective Project Management” in cooperation of Business Clinics at Damascus University. He discussed what is monitoring and evaluation effectiveness as well as its applications, indicators and how to set them and what is the components of the effective M&E System. More than 20 students attended the workshop.
On 17/3/2016, Dr. Bassem Kaissi presented the Matre Tempus project to MUBS Board of Trustees. The presentation included an overview about the project and a detailed discussion of its different work packages, milestones, deliverables, and inter-dependencies. Dr. Kaissi then informed the Board about the remaining activities and that MUBS is leading the “policy advice” work package. Members of the Board were impressed with the project and its positive impact on business schools in Lebanon.
